Default Questions about "end game" in this game

Hey all, I apologize for asking a newbie question, but a friend and I are considering trying out Guild Wars together but we have very different tastes and wants from it. I understand the game is heavily focused on the pvp aspect (guild wars after all), and when I played the original release the end game content was solely focused on this aspect. This is understandable but what I enjoy is end game content that doesn't require pvp. It is very possible that this game simply won't be for me, but what I'm hoping is that there is sufficient pve content (I don't mean raids or anything like WoW, just enough things to farm and grind etc to better your character) to make me enjoy the game on a long-term level. If anyone can let me know whether it seems like this is the type of game we could both enjoy I'd really appreciate it, thanks!

Well as afar as Pve is concerned. With three big campaigns, and an expansion there is plenty of pve for you to enjoy. Not only are there alot of missions to do across all three campaigns, but each campaign has high end areas.
Prophecies, the first game, has Sorrows Furnace.
Factions, the second game, has two actually The Deep and Urgoz's Warren
Nightfall, the third game, has the Domain of Anguish.
and all three campaigns have access to two other high-end elite areas, Fissure of Woe and the Underworld.
Even if you finish all games and high-end areas, there still the many numerous titles you can do. Vanquishing, which means killing all enemies in an area, Cartographer, Guardian, protector, Treasure Hunter, Seeker of Wisdom, the list goes on and on.

basically for a first time player, there will be alot of Pve things to enjoy.

I appreciate the response, sounds promising! I understand that a lot of the "expansions" are in fact stand-alone, which of them would be best to buy for someone that's getting started?

All of the games except Eye Of The North are stand-alone.

Prophecies has the longest and best storyline. Factions has a short storyline and adds Competetive Missions and Alliance Battles to the PvP aspect of the game. Nightfall, has a reasonable long campaign, and adds heroes (customisable NPC allies).
Eye Of The North (NOT Stand-alone) is a pretty short campaign, but has lots of other things to do, such as dungeons.

I personally would go and buy the Complete Collection, which features all 4 games. I have heard this package is anavailible in some countries, but there is another package called The Trilogy, which has all 3 stand alone games.

If you only want to buy one pack to start with, the Prophecies & Eye Of The North is a nice combo, and is availible quite cheaply.

Just get the trilogy on steam or buy the complete collection from amazon or something if you live in europe

Yeah, get the Trilogy or Complete Collection to get them all, much more cost effective. As for the pvp/pve thing, I've been playing pretty regularly since a little after release, and I don't pvp. Even after beating all 3 campaigns and the expansion and elite areas, which takes a while, you can still stay busy. If you don't mind a little farming/grinding, then there are plenty of goals (titles) to keep you busy for a long time

^This.

The GW endgame hasn't been about PvP in a long time. With the exception of a 4 v 4 fight (with at least 2 henchmen on each side) at the end of the Prophesies tutorial zone, it is entirely possible to play through all 3.25 chapters without entering PvP once.

Of course, if you want to PvP, it's there. But there's also a large choice of elite areas, title grinding, Guardian/Vanquisher/Explorer/Skill Hunter titles, minigames (in EotN, mostly).

If you're looking for 40-man raids and the like, we ain't got 'em and thankfully.

GoGamer.com also has Guild War's Trilogy for $30 usually. I don't really trust Steam either lol.
